about

The Yiddish title translates as "the sad wedding," which is an understatement, considering that the bride and groom both (spoiler) drop dead. Isaac Reingold's version of the 1893 hit by Gussie Lord Davis, which actually got turned into a whole theater production. I love how cheerful the tune is - in fact, a jig - while the characters are dropping like flies.

lyrics

Suddenly the woman caught sight of the bridegroom's cheerful face, And as the rabbi began to do his duty... "Stop!" her voice was heard - "don't commit a sin! I am this man's wife - and this is his child!"
