about

This mysterious song, sung to the Gilded Age favorite "In the Shade of an Old Apple Tree," has two different texts. In one, a man meets a sad prostitute in a house of ill repute. In the other, four people on four floors of a tenement house are playing piano, getting ready for a wedding, tiptoeing around a sickbed, and carrying a corpse out for burial.
